“Halfway between the physical and spiritual worlds” – Ghostwood Country Club
What’s your band’s name? Where’d the name come from?
Ghostwood Country Club – it’s a place halfway between the physical and spiritual worlds, a luxury resort for your soul with an endless party where we are the house band. It comes from the TV show Twin Peaks.
The Yellow Collar Collective is all about the daily grind musicians go through to perfect their craft, what has been your biggest struggle and accomplishment as a musician?
The biggest struggle is getting attention in an over-saturated marketplace. The biggest accomplishment has been finding our voices as songwriters and composing music we believe in.
What other instruments can you and your fellow band members play?
Shawn plays guitar and bass, Tommy plays guitar, bass, piano, and drums.
Why’d you start making music and why specifically did you choose your genre?
It wasn’t even a choice, it was a burning desire that oculd not be appeased. We just had to learn, and once you do you just keep going. Indie rock as a genre is an extension of the classic 1960’s – 1970’s rock music that inspires us the most.
Do you have any memorable musical experiences that have shaped who you guys are?
Shawn: The Strokes, The Theater at Madison Square Garden, NY, October 30, 2003
Tommy: The Rolling Stones, The Bigger Bang Tour, Albany, NY, September 17, 2005
Have you ever released any albums or are working on any now? Any special projects?
The EP’s CODA, 80’s Baby and Roninology are up on Soundcloud. We like releasing EP’s, we have 2 more almost done that should be out before the end of the year, then we’re gonna do a fully album for early 2016.
Do you collaborate with other artists? Inside and outside your genre?
We often perform with Dean Waters, a rapper-singer we’ve known for a long time. It’s always a blast to have him join us on stage.
What venues and events have you performed at in the past five years? Which has been your favorite?
Ghostwood Country Club has only been rocking around New York for a year. So far, we’ve played The Sidewalk Cafe, Bar 9, East Village Social, The Late Late, and Webster Hall. Webster is our favorite because they gave us a dressing room and free beer.
How do you acquire shows and promote yourself? Do you have any recommendations for other artists?
We do both the same way. We use old technology and new, from printed flyers to various platforms of social media. We recommend you should go to as many live shows as you can and just ask whoever is behind the bar who books bands there.
Do you have any mottos?
“Buy the ticket, take the ride” – Hunter S. Thompson
What artists inspire you?
The Rolling Stones, The Libertines, Iggy Pop, The Strokes, Nirvana, Guns ‘N Roses, T.Rex, Sky Ferreira, Ariel Pink, Wu-Tang Clan, Bob Dylan, Lana Del Rey, Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, Michael Jackson, Otis Redding, David Bowie, Wilson Pickett, we could go on forever.
What’s next for your band?
We’re gonna be huge!
What do you do when you’re not listening to or making music?
Make sweet sweet love.
What’s your favorite song(s) right now?
Shawn: “My Molly” by Sky Ferreira and Ariel Pink and “The Chain” by Fleetwood Mac
Tommy: “Where Did You Sleep Last Night” by Nirvana after Leadbelly and “I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You)” by Aretha Franklin
